Club Nicknames: Burnley are known as "The Clarets" because of the main colour of the club's home shirts. The club's original colours were black and yellow stripes, giving rise to the nickname of "Hornets" but this was changed to claret and blue in 1911 as the club tried to emulate the success of Aston Villa who were dominant club in the Football league at that time. The club has also been known as "The Turfites" after Turf Moor, their home football ground.
Origins: Burnley started life as a rugby club - Burnley Rovers - but in 1882 decided to switch codes and became Burnley Football Club. They originally played at Calder Vale but soon moved to their current home, Turf Moor, following an invitation by Burnley Cricket Club which had been formed in 1833 and moved there ten years later.
