History of Football: Leicester City FC

Origins: Leicester City Football Club was founded as Leicester Fosse in 1884. The word 'fosse' comes from the Latin 'fossa' meaning ditch. Fosse Way was a Roman Road - built in the Ist Century AD - which ran from Exeter to Lincoln. It crossed another Roman Road - Watling Street - just south of Leicester and the club played its first matches in a field near to Fosse Road which was clearly based on the ancient route. Following Leicester's newly-found city status, the club name was changed to Leicester City in 1919.
