Origins: Stoke City is the second oldest professional football club in the world (after Notts County). The club was originally founded in 1863 as Stoke Ramblers when pupils of Charterhouse School formed a football club while apprentices at the North Staffordshire Railway works in Stoke-upon-Trent. Their first documented match took place at the Victoria Cricket Ground in 1868. In 1875 they moved to Sweetings Field and three years later they merged with Stoke Victoria Cricket Club to become Stoke Football Club and moved again to the Athletic Club ground which became known as the Victoria Ground.
Following Stoke-on-Trent’s new city status in 1925 they changed their name again to Stoke City F.C. The club moved to a new ground – the Britannia Stadium – in 1997. The ground was subsequently re-named the Bet365 Stadium.
