Club Nicknames: Sunderland’s nicknames include ‘Lads,’ 'Mackems' - a traditional name given to people from Sunderland - and ‘The Rokerites, ‘Roker Men’ or ‘Rokermen’ after their former Roker Park ground. They are also known as ‘Coal Cats’ and, more pertinently, ‘The Black Cats.’

The link between the club and the black cat stems from a gun battery in 1805 on the River Wear, renamed the ‘Black Cat’ battery after soldiers heard the sound of a wailing black cat. The nickname was sealed when a black kitten owned by twelve-year-old Billy Morris was believed to bring Sunderland luck as it sat in his pocket at Wembley Stadium throughout the 1937 FA Cup Final which Sunderland went on to win.

History of Football: Sunderland AFC

Origins: Sunderland Association Football Club was founded in 1879 by a graduate of Glasgow University – James Allan – who had begun teaching at Hendon Board School. Its original name was Sunderland and District Teachers’ Association Football Club and changed to Sunderland A.F.C. a year later.

The club played its first matches at the Blue House Field in Hendon before moving to Ashbrooke and then The Cedars before moving north of the Wear to fields in Roker and Fulwell. They then settled at Newcastle Road in 1886 before moving to Roker Park where they stayed for 99 years> They moved once more to the purpose-built Sunderland Stadium of Light in 1997.
