England: Premier League

The English Premier League began in the 1992/1993 football season, becoming the new Level One of the English football league system (known as the football pyramid) and replacing the old Football League First Division.

The league comprises twenty football teams.

Three teams are relegated from the Premier League at the end of each season, being replaced by teams from the Football League Championship.

Through the Football Association the Premier League is part of the UEFA Confederation which is responsible for clubs and national football teams in Europe.

The top four teams in the league currently qualify for the UEFA Champions League, whilst the fifth placed team qualifies for the UEFA Europa League.

The Premier League has had commercial sponsors since the second season of its existence:

Carling: 1994 - 2001

Barclaycard: 2002 - 2004

Barclays: 2005 - 2016

From the 2016/17 season the league has been known simply as 'The Premier League'
